Smoke Detectors Interconnected

Are my Smoke Detectors Interconnected?

What is an Interlinked Smoke Alarm?

An interlinked smoke alarm is a smoke detector that communicates to the other smoke detectors in your residence so that in the event of a fire if one of the smoke alarms detects a fire, all of the smoke detectors will sound the alarm.

Do Smoke Alarms need to be Interconnected?

All rental properties in England now come under a higher detection level requirement than ever before and Landlords must follow Domestic Fire Alarm Regulations (BS 5839-6: 2019). This recommends installing interlinking smoke alarms.

In order to safeguard your tenants, all smoke alarms should be interlinked (connected to one another).

There are 2 ways they can be connected to each other:

  • Wired: The alarms are joined together by a wire.
  • Wireless: The alarms are connected via radiofrequency.

Benefits of Interlinked Smoke Alarms

Standalone smoke, heat, and CO alarms are limited in both the area they can monitor and the distance their sound can travel.

However, with an interlinked smoke alarm system, when connected, all alarms are activated at the same time ensuring everyone in the property is alerted.

Most alarms have a test push button as standard. Press this test button for approximately 5 seconds and the alarm should sound. If the detectors at the property are interlinked, they too will also sound.

Any smoke alarms that do not sound should be investigated immediately.

Did you know that smoke alarms have a “replace by” date and 85% are unknowingly out of date?
